Swift

  • High yields very early in season

  • Excellent all round cooking qualities

  • Early yields of large sized tubers

First early.. 'Swift' is among the fastest maturing of the first early varieties, being the quickest to produce heavy crops of round, smooth, white-fleshed baby new potatoes, and producing larger tubers than Potato 'Rocket'. Its short bushy habit makes it ideal for containers or potato bags where space is limited. Potato 'Swift also has partial eelworm resistance.

Husbandry Guidelines

This information is intended to give growers a broad understanding of the variety and its growth requirements; it was last updated on October 2021. Please consult your own agronomist for the best practice on your farm and your end requirements.

Pre Planting

We recommend all seed should be removed from the packaging at the earliest possible
opportunity and no later than 5 days after delivery. Seed should then be kept in a dry, well ventilated, frost free. All potatoes, particularly first early varieties (except for maincrops) will benefit from ‘chitting’ prior to planting out. The chitting process encourages the seed to sprout, which then when planted, helps them to establish more readily, leading to bigger early crops. Simply place them, blunt end up, in an old egg box until the shoots are approximately 1.5 to 2.5cm (0.5 to 1in)

Planting and Growing

Plant Feb – April We recommend planting closer (9-10in) than other early potatoes and keep especially well watered Foliage: Height and spread: 60cm (24").

Harvest and Storage

Harvest May – June , in as little as7 weeks from planting. To maintain a good skinfinish in store, try to keep the relative humidity low and minimise free moisture, especially during the curing period.
